Superintendent’s Report: During the Superintendent’s report, Dr. Jason Richardson presented a brief overview and outcomes from his dissertation study, “The Credit Recovery Experience at Highland Park High School: A Qualitative Study.” Click here to view his presentation. He also donated a bounded copy of his dissertation to the High School Media Center. The board thanks Dr. Richardson for his thoughtful presentation and research.

That same spirit of connection and spirit is at the heart of our district’s Culture and Climate Strategic Plan Goal. The second presentation during the Superintendent’s report given by Dr. Susca, Ms. Coppola, and Dr. Richardson included a three-year implementation plan for the Nurtured Heart Approach, which provides the district with a common language and framework to continue building positive relationships and strengthen the culture of every classroom and school. Lastly, Dr. Susca reminded the board that it is important to ground our culture and climate work in data. The board reviewed the Spring School Safety and Discipline (SSDS) report, which includes a comparison of last year’s data to this past year. The encouraging trends show that the efforts are making an impact. Click here to view the SSDS presentation.

Curriculum and Instruction: The Board approved field trip requests and athletic schedules for the 2025–2026 fall and winter seasons, as well as the placement of Rutgers University students for internships and practicum experiences in our schools. To further strengthen school climate, the district will continue to implement the New Jersey School Climate Initiative Survey across schools and the community. The Board also approved the DREAMS Program, a partnership with NJDCF, NJDOE, and Rutgers UBHC to expand trauma-informed and healing-centered practices, including the Nurtured Heart Approach. In addition, the district will also continue working with the New Jersey Inclusion Project at Irving Primary School to enhance inclusive instructional practices.

Finance and Facilities:  The Board approved contractors for professional development, including Jana Lee Consulting, to support professional learning and coaching to strengthen co-teaching practices. In addition, the Board approved submission of the ESEA Grant Application and salaries funded by state and federal grants for the 2025-2026 school year.
