Policies & Procedures
Grades K-3
All students receive enrichment services.
Grades 4-5
All students are exposed to the 4Cs (Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking and Creativity) through a weekly STEM Enrichment class with the ALP Teacher.
Students who are identified as a good fit for the program are included in one of six cycles based on their interests and input from the appropriate subject teacher. The six cycles are based on fiction, nonfiction, art, music and history, science and health.
Grade 6
All students are placed into Math 6+ (advanced mathematics).
Grades 7-8
As part of the primary referral for gifted and talented students, HPMS uses multiple measures including a variety of assessment data and teacher referrals, to invite students to sign up for advanced courses in mathematics. These recommendations are made in the beginning of June. Students not recommended for advanced mathematics courses can waive into these higher level courses if their parents agree. This allows students who are gifted & talented, but may not have received high assessments scores and/or teacher's recommendation, the ability to access more advanced coursework.
Grades 9-12
As part of the primary referral for gifted and talented students, HPHS uses recommendations from teachers to invite students to sign up for Honors and Advanced Placement classes. These recommendations are made at the end of semester 1 in late January by the grade level teachers in all core academic areas beginning in 8th grade through 11th grade. The recommendations are based on student grades and work ethic demonstrated. Students not recommended for Honors or AP courses can waive into Honors or AP courses if their parents agree. This allows students who are gifted & talented, but may not have received a teacher's recommendation, the ability to access more advanced coursework.
