MS Math Redesign Resources

In an effort to ensure that all students are receiving the best and most appropriate mathematics instruction, the district’s board of education and administration have worked over the past two years to review the overall philosophy of our program and the needs of our students as they move into Grade Six mathematics coursework and beyond. We believe that the ultimate goal is to provide  an academically challenging curriculum for all our students while recognizing they will continue to learn, grow, and change over the next several years.

In this light, we will be moving next year from offering two sixth grade math courses, Math 6 and Math 6A (Advanced), to one option, Math 6+ (Plus). This means that all students entering sixth grade during the 2020–2021 school year and beyond will be placed in Math 6+. This course is designed so that all students can develop the requisite skills  in mathematics. It is also designed to allow for differentiated instruction so that all students have the opportunity of success: Students who need basic skills intervention, as well as students needing enrichment, will continue to receive the appropriate support.

Highland Park School District is committed to improving outcomes in mathematics for all students in the district. Students will receive a challenging curriculum in sixth grade, coupled with support for remedial and advanced instruction. Professional development will be offered to middle school math teachers, particularly on differentiated instruction, and the Math 6+ curriculum is being upgraded. The Middle School math sequence of courses following Math 6+, as well as the High School math sequence of courses will be comparable to the past.
